According to the MoD, up to eight dis-
mounts can be accommodated in the rear
of the vehicle. It is not clear, however, if this
number relates to the 30mm turreted ver-
sion of the NGAFV shown in this article or
a turretless APC variant which might have
greater internal volume available for the
maximum number of dismounts. When
asked by DTR about what other NGAFV
variants were planned, the MoD declined
to comment, citing confidentiality reasons.
All crew and passenger positions have
blast attenuating seating and multi-point
restraints. Dismounts are provided with
two hatches in the hull roof over the troop
compartment. These enable troops to
provide watch and also serve as emergency

The NGAFV running gear features six
road wheels per side and conventional
steel tracks. The choice of steel over rubber
band tracks is intriguing in view of the
vehicle’s modest all-up weight (29 tonnes).
Latest-generation rubber band tracks now
have higher load capacity to cope with
heavier (30+ tonnes) vehicles like IFVs, and
are quieter, more durable and easier for the
crew to replace than steel tracks.
The driver is seated in the hull to port
with the commander to starboard and the
gunner on his left. Crew entry/egress is via a
rear ramp, which also has a smaller hinged
access door built in should the vehicle loose
electrical or hydraulic power and the ramp
fail to drop.
Based on a desktop assessment of its
combat weight and available photographs,
the NGAFV is likely to be protected to a
maximum of STANAG 4569 Level 4 across
the frontal arc against kinetic threats and
possibly to Level 4a/4b against blast. It is
unclear whether the crew, seated down
within the hull, are further protected
within a separate survivability cell as in
some of the latest IFV designs.
The NGAFV may make use of high-hard-
ness spaced armour over the hull front
and flanks, although material thicknesses
are difficult to discern from the images
released to date. Thin (maximum 10mm
plate) fold-up skirts cover the tracks down
the full length of the vehicle.
As it is unmanned, the Adder 30mm tur-
ret is probably armoured to at most STAN-
AG 4569 Level 2 against kinetic threats.
This likely saves 1,500-2,000kg in passive
armour compared to manned turrets that
need greater protection. It also partly
explains the NGAFV’s lower than average
combat weight next to vehicles such as the
British Army’s new Ajax combat recon-
naissance vehicle (38 tonnes), CV9035 (35
tonnes) and Rheinmnetall’s Lynx KF 31/41
(38 and 44 tonnes respectively).
The NGAFV is reportedly powered by
a 711hp diesel engine coupled to STK’s
HMX3000 automatic transmission. This
grants a top road speed of 70km/h and a
power-to-weight ratio of 24.5hp/tonne.
Maximum road range is 500km.
The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has received the final prototype of its next generation
AFV. Developed together with the Defence Science and Technology Agency and our local
defence industry, the next-generation AFV will provide the SAF’s armoured forces with enhanced
firepower, protection, mobility and situational awareness. Initiated in 2006 to replace the
ULTRA M113 AFV, which has been in service since the early 70s, this next-generation AFV
will be commissioned by 2019.
