New junctional tourniquet stems flow
Bundeswehr tests warship laser
The US Army is fielding a new junctional tourniquet
designed to reduce or stop blood loss from wounds to
the groin or armpit area where standard tourniquets are
Introduced by the US Army Medical Material Agency in
2015 and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration
in for inguinal (groin) and axillary use (armpit), as well as for
pelvic binding, the SAM junctional tourniquet (SJT) weighs
488g and typically takes less than 25 seconds to apply.
The Target Compression Device (TCD) or bladder on the
underside of the belt is placed at or near the injury site and
pumped up until the bleeding stops. Two TCDs can be
used to occlude blood flow bilaterally if needed. The buckle
provides the clinically correct force to the wound, avoiding
over or under-tightening.
The SJT exceeds the requirements of MIL-STD810G and
is designed to augment the in-service Combat Application
Tourniquet which does not work on junctional injuries.
Exsanguination, or bleeding to death, is the most common
cause of potentially survivable death to wounded warfighters.
Groin and pelvic injuries have become increasingly common
due to the widespread use of improvised explosive devices
(IED). IED blast often causes pelvic fractures and high leg
The Bundeswehr and Rheinmetall have successfully tested
a high energy laser (HEL) effector onboard a German Navy
With a 10kW HEL effector mounted to a MLG 27 stabilised
naval gun system, test activities consisted of tracking of
potential targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles and
small surface craft. The HEL effector was also tested against
stationary targets on land.
In a 19 February release, Rheinmetall said that the testing
demonstrated for the first time the effectiveness of its HEL
effector technology for maritime operations, and that the
results will provide important input for the development of
future HEL naval effectors.
The company has previously combined a 20kW HEL
effector on a MLG 27 gun, which underwent sea trials in
Rheinmetall has also installed a HEL effector on an
Oerlikon Skyshield air defence turret in place of the 35mm
revolver cannon, with a live fire demonstration conducted
in 2013. This laser-based air defence system consists of an
Oerlikon Skyshield or Skyguard fire control unit for target
acquisition and weapon control, coupled with an Oerlikon
high-energy laser gun using a revolver gun turret equipped
with HEL effectors. Each HEL effector consists of one 10kW
fibre laser and a beam-forming unit. Commercial off-the-shelf
fibre lasers were modified for the air defence role. The beam-
forming unit provides diffraction-limited beam focusing, target
imaging and fine tracking of the target.
By using beam-superimposing technology, Rheinmetall
has concentrated the power of single laser beams into one
injuries, which result in massive blood loss (hemorrhage) if
not immediately treated.

small spot. This technology not only allows superimposition
of multiple laser beams on a single gun platform, but also
superimposition of multiple gun platforms. This enables an
almost unlimited (e.g 100kW and more) power output in line
with the evolving air defence requirement. As a result, the
high-energy laser HEL provides efficient protection against a
large spectrum of modern air threats.
For mobile ground operations Rheinmetall has
demonstrated the effectiveness of the HEL concept in the
5kW class in an armoured personnel carrier, the 20kW class
in a Boxer armoured fighting vehicle as well as the 50kW
class in an 8x8 container truck.
