Leveraging off its experience in the design, development
and operation of unmanned systems of various types, Elbit
Systems unveiled in early February its Seagull unmanned
surface vessel (USV).
Described as an organic, modular, highly autonomous,
multi-mission USV system, Seagull is a 12m craft with
replaceable mission modules: predominantly for mine
countermeasures (MCM) or anti-submarine warfare (ASW).
Other mission payload suites include electronic warfare,
surface force protection and hydrography. All utilise the same
baseline vessel, mission control system (MCS) and data links.

in concert using a single MCS, from manned ships or from

in known and unknown areas, including area survey, search,
detection, classification, identification, neutralisation and
verification of bottom, moored and drifting sea mines. It is
equipped to search the entire water volume and operate
remotely-operated and expendable mine-disposal underwater
vehicles to identify and neutralise mines.
Sensor fits include towed, forward-looking and dipping
sonars, multi-beam echo sounders, side-scan and synthetic-
aperture sonars and diver detection sonars, radar transceiver
and an electro-optic and infra-red sensor pod.

The aluminium hull features large rubber bump pads across
the entire bow and along both flanks to protect the hull during

Seagull provides the parent ship or base commander with
an off-board, available and rapidly deployable ASW capability
to protect critical maritime areas and high-value assets from
submarines without exposing the parent ship to undue risk.
As it is unmanned, Seagull represents a loitering deterrent
to enemy submarine activity in a manner which conventional
surface combatants would consider unacceptably high risk.
As with other USV designs, Seagull offers navies a true
force-multiplier to perform tasks typically considered too high
risk for manned assets and at dramatically reduced cost and

Paseo sight making inroads
Weaponised UGV demos at Singapore Airshow
A relatively new panoramic combat vehicle sighting system
developed by Sagem has been selected to equip the French
Army’s new Jaguar EBRC 6x6 combat reconnaissance
Already selected by a number of international customers,
the Paseo sight will be integrated into the Nexter T40 two-
man turret on the Jaguar EBRC. The T40 turret is equipped
with the 40mm Cased Telescoped Armament System,
which has also been adopted by the British Army for its new
Ajax tracked reconnaissance vehicle and upgraded Warrior
infantry fighting vehicle.
Estonian firm Milrem has again aired its tracked unmanned
ground vehicle (UGV) technology demonstrator, this time at
the Singapore Airshow 2016 in February.
First featured in the October 2015 issue of DTR following
its debut at the Defence & Security Equipment International
2015 exhibition in September of last year, an advanced
prototype of the Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System
(THeMIS) was shown in Singapore fitted with a Singapore
Technologies Kinetics Adder remote weapon system armed
with a 7.62mm medium machine gun.
THeMIS has a top speed of 50km/h and sufficient battery
power and fuel capacity for 8 hours of continuous operation.
The video embedded with this story highlights the superior
cross-country mobility and obstacle clearance of a tracked
configuration for UGVs and the ability to overcome terrain
which proves difficult for similar size UGVs, which generally
suffer from small wheel size and low ground clearance in
order to remain light and compact.

Paseo can function as the primary gunner or commander’s
day/night sight for all types of armoured fighting vehicles
(AFV) and main battle tanks. It is thus ideally suited to combat
vehicles with main armament calibres from 30mm cannon to
125mm tank guns. Paseo is also able to operate in the real-
time battlefield surveillance and artillery forward observation
Paseo enables the detection, identification and designation
of air-land threats, fire-on-the-move and high first round
hit probability based on the utilisation of advanced, very
high-resolution digital optronic sensors. These include a
day colour high-definition video camera and a Sagem Satis
thermal imager, and line-of-sight stabilisation.
According to details provided by Sagem to DTR, Paseo is
able to detect targets at 12,000m, and recognise and then
identify a target at 7,700m and 4,200m respectively.
Other features include advanced video image processing,
a track-while-scan function, threat geo-localisation
(interconnected with the inertial navigation system),
embedded ballistic protection and optional anti-tank missile
firing capability and a target auto-track facility.
Sagem has also developed the Epsilon 10 land navigation
system for armoured vehicles. Epsilon 10 provides heading
and positioning information to the vehicle during extended
periods without GPS reception. It also provides geo-
location information to command and controls systems, thus
facilitating Blue Force tracking.
Epsilon 10 has been selected by Renault Trucks Defense
for its Battlenet Inside digital electronics suite for AFVs.
