Working on the logic that helicopter pilots have enjoyed
the benefit of properly engineered crashworthy seats and
restraints for some time and that seated passengers should be
afforded the same degree of protection, QinetiQ implemented
a solution which involved replacing the CH-47D’s red canvas
wall-mounted seats with seats more akin to those used in
Formula 1 racing.
The news seats feature a five-point harness and dampening
to soften the impact imparted to the body in the event of a hard
Currently in production for the Army’s CH-47D aircraft,
the seat assemblies are being installed as part of the MCU.
New lighter weight flooring is also being installed to offset the
additional weight of the seat assemblies and provide enhanced
and less obstructive ballistic protection.
To ensure the new seating solution met the required
airworthiness and safety standards, QinetiQ – working with the
US cabin upgrade supplier and in its capacity as an Authorised
Engineering Organisation for the Australian Defence Force
– provided independent certification of the design and the
subsequent modifications required on the aircraft.
Other CH-47 users, including the US Army, UK Ministry of
Defence and both the Canadian and Dutch defence materiel
procurement agencies, have shown interest in the seating
solution in production for Australia.
DTR understands that the new seating is to be adopted for
the seven F model Chinooks due for delivery to the Australian
Army in April 2015.

QinetiQ Australia has overseen the development of new
passenger seating assemblies for Australian Army CH-47D
Chinook medium lift helicopters.
The work was carried out under the Army Aviation Systems
Project Office Main Cabin Upgrade (MCU) for the D model
fleet, and stemmed from concerns about the safety of existing
seating following a number of incidents in Afghanistan
involving Army CH-47 Chinooks.
Carl-Gustaf gets smart
and lightens up
Saab has developed the M4 version of the venerable
Carl-Gustaf 84mm recoilless rifle to keep pace with solder
requirements and take advantage of advances in technology.
The Carl-Gustaf M4 retains the combat-proven lethality and
compatibility with a wide range of 84mm ammunition natures
of the extant M3 version, but is 3kg lighter and 60mm shorter.
In addition to the reduced overall length, the weight savings
in the M4 have been realised predominantly through the
adoption of a titanium barrel liner (1.1kg), modification of the
carbon fibre outer casing (0.8kg) and a redesigned venturi
Unlike previous models, the M4 can be carried when
loaded, enabling users to react faster to threats and tactically
relocate when required.
An integrated electronic shot counter automatically counts
every full calibre round that is fired through the weapon,
enabling end users to keep track of wear and replace it
before end of life-of-type is reached.
Other features of the M4 include an adjustable shoulder
rest and front grip.
The M4 has also been designed to be compatible with
future technologies such as a variety of intelligent sight
systems and future programmable ammunition. The intelligent
sight capability automatically calculates range and other
ballistic computations to provide higher accuracy and hit
