Submarine work for GD
The US Navy has awarded a
US$234 million contract to General
Dynamics Electric Boat to provide
planning yard work, engineering
and technical support for nuclear
submarines. Activities will provide
design, engineering, material and
logistics support, and research and
development activities for active
submarines and submersibles.
Energid Technologies has been
awarded a contract to develop a
digital simulation for safety testing
of autonomous military convoys. The
simulation will model sensors as well
as the interaction between vehicles
and the environment, with a heavy
emphasis on applying autonomy
Orders for air
Alloy Surfaces has won a US$22.2
million contract to produce the MJU-
66 Special Material Decoy for the
US Air Force and Navy. The MJU-66
infrared countermeasures decoy
has day and night capability and will
protect C-130 aircraft from air-to-air
and surface-to-air infrared missiles.
UH-60M for Mexico
Sikorsky has received a US$203
million order to supply 18 UH-60M
Black Hawk helicopters to the
Mexican Air Force. The Foreign
Military Sale will also include 36
M134D 7.62mm Miniguns and 18
sets of AN/AVS-9 Night Vision
Goggles. Deliveries are expected to
be complete by 30 May 2016.
AAR for Hawkeye
Northrop Grumman has completed
preliminary design review of an aerial
refueling capability for US Navy E-2D
Advanced Hawkeye radar aircraft.
The changes include new seats
to enhance cockpit field of view,
formation lights to avoid collisions
and improved flight control software
to help pilots fly the aircraft while
refueling. The refueling capability will
be installed on new E-2Ds as well as
retrofitted to existing Hawkeye aircraft.
Northrop Grumman’s RQ-4 Global
Hawk high altitude long endurance un-
manned aerial vehicle has successfully
demonstrated expanded radar and com-
munications capabilities as part of tests
for its new Multi-Platform Radar Tech-
nology Insertion Program (MP-RTIP).
Flown out of Edwards Air Force Base,
the tests provided the first demonstra-
tion of interoperability with the latest US
Air Force (USAF) Distributed Common
Ground System upgrades and “positive”
results from the MP-RTIP radar’s mari-

flown by the Global Hawk. “One mission
stretched across three calendar days
and collected mission data from the
North Pacific coast to the eastern edge
of the Gulf of Mexico via various intelli-
gence centres,” Northrop Grumman said.
Global Hawks equipped with the MP-
RTIP sensor, which is capable of detect-
ing both fixed and moving targets, have
been flying early operational capability
(EOC) missions since September 2013,
providing the high priority wide area sur-
veillance ground moving target indicator
(GMTI) capability in the US Central and
Africa Command regions.
Full system capability will be demon-
strated when the system enters initial
operational test and evaluation in the
second quarter of 2015.
The US Navy has conducted a surface
warfare capability demonstration of the
Kongsberg Naval Strike Missile (NSM)
from the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS)
USS Coronado. The 23 September test
was successful, with the missile scoring
a direct hit on a Mobile Ship Target.

a tremendous opportunity to see the ca-
pabilities of both the ship and the missile,
and what we saw today has great poten-
tial for LCS and other fleet assets.”
The LCS has been criticised in some
quarters for its paucity of offensive
strike capabilities against surface
targets. Canister-launched NSM has
been seen installed on the LCS in mod-
el form at various naval shows recently.
The NSM is a new-generation
long-range precision strike missile de-
signed to be launched from surface
vessels against a variety of targets. The
missile is understood to have a 125kg
high-explosive fragmentation warhead
and range of around 185km.
NSM became operational in 2012 on
Norwegian Nansen-class frigates and
Skjold-class missile torpedo boats. The
NSM also serves in the Polish Coastal
Missile Division, where it is container-
launched from a 6x6 truck.

Three Bushmaster protected
mobility vehicles built by Thales
Australia for Indonesia’s special
operations command (Kopassus)
have been photographed in service.
The image shows the three Bush-
masters on parade in Surabuya,
East Java in late September. One
of the vehicles is seen in an all-
black paint scheme.
Each of the vehicles is the
troop carrier variant fitted with a
pintle-mounted 7.62mm machine
gun alongside the roof hatch.
The government-to-government sale
of Bushmaster vehicles to Indonesia
was overseen by the Australian Military
Thales Australia will also supply the
Bushmaster to the Japanese Ground
Self-Defense Force, with delivery of
four vehicles scheduled by the end of
2014. In late 2013, Jamaica ordered 12
Bushmasters for delivery in 2015.

In August, a USAF Global Hawk com-
pleted the 100th operational mission in
Southwest Asia and recently expanded
into the Pacific region, when two Global
Hawk aircraft deployed to Guam to sup-
port US Pacific Command peacetime
Global Hawk has flown more than
115,000 flight hours in support of global
missions, including anti-terrorism, anti-
piracy, humanitarian assistance, disas-
ter relief, airborne communications and
On 15 September, Northrop Grumman
announced a US$354 million contract
from the USAF for three Global Hawks,
bringing the fleet size to 37 by 2017.
The new aircraft will be Multi-INT
models fitted with advanced imaging and
electronic signals sensors capable of
collecting multiple types of intelligence
from high altitudes for up to 32 hours.
The contract also includes retrofit
kits to add airborne signals intelligence
payload (ASIP) sensors into two of the
existing RQ-4 platforms, providing them
with Multi-INT capability. ASIP is an
advanced intelligence, surveillance and
reconnaissance collection sensor, also
built by Northrop Grumman.
The ASIP retrofit kits are scheduled for
delivery commencing in late 2016.

The Multi-Platform Radar Technology Insertion Program (MP-RTIP) radar uses AESA
technology and commercial off-the-shelf hardware to deliver long-range, very high-resolution
synthetic aperture radar, ground moving target indicator capabilities and air target tracking.
Fundamental to the radar is its modular scalable design, which allows it to be applied to
multiple airborne platforms.
MP-RTIP will provide warfighters with improved combat identification, target tracking and time
critical targeting, while adding a new air-to-air capability to support cruise missile defense. This
powerful combination can aid commanders in developing predictive battlespace awareness
and targeting solutions.
Aimed at redefining air-to-surface/air-to-air surveillance, the MP-RTIP radar is being developed
by a Northrop Grumman-Raytheon team for the USAF Electronic Systems Center.
for Global Hawk
The Yemeni Government will receive
an Insitu ScanEagle unmanned aircraft
system (UAS) under a US$10.98 million
Foreign Military Sales contract.
The ScanEagle UAS for Yemen is to
consist of nine ScanEagle electro-op-
tics and three ScanEagle infra-red un-
manned aerial vehicles (UAV), as well
as the requisite launch and recovery
The order also provides for one
12-month/3,600 flight-hour sustain-
ment package with acceptance testing,
spares, technical manuals and training, a
site activation team, field service repre-
sentative and force protection elements.
The Czech Republic also recent-
ly placed a US$6.76 million order for
seven ScanEagle electro-optics and
three NightEagle UAVs for use by its
forces in Afghanistan.
Deliveries to both Yemen and the
Czech Republic are scheduled for
completion by September 2015.
